Love is in the air and with Valentine’s Day almost upon us I wanted to share with you my Top 5 stylish picks for your man this Valentine’s. Now, I know you should show your love for your other half every day of the year – but I do love an excuse to spoil him. Especially when the gifts are this good.
‘Now, I know you should show your love for your other half every day of the year – but I do love an excuse to spoil him’.
If you’re anything like me you will recognise the mad panicked feeling you get in the days before, when you realise you haven’t bought or ordered anything (we are busy parents after all). You might traipse around the stores local to you or trawl online in an attempt to find the perfect gift, only to find a vast array of ‘same old, same old’ (sound familiar?). A red foil heart-shaped balloon and an ‘I Love You’ teddy bear just aren’t going to cut it. And to make it a whole lot worse, David always seems to surprise me with the most amazing and well thought out presents.
So I’m hoping this will help, or at the very least give you some inspiration for what to buy your man this Valentine’s Day.
1. Phantom Watches: Collection One
Collection One is the first watch range by British designer Martin Russell. Launched in late 2014 there are 4 styles to choose from.
Each piece is made from matte sand-blasted steel and houses Miyota Japanese quartz movements. With soft Italian leather straps they will age beautifully over time.
My favourite is the Black/Brown Edition. All watches are priced at £125 and can be ordered from their website.
2. The Pen by Ajoto
With design at the heart of this minimalist pen it has taken founder and designer Chris Holden and his team, over 3 years to perfect. And it was well worth the wait.
Actually, David already has this pen. He loved the design so much that he bought a few for his colleagues at his design studio. This was a couple of years ago when Ajoto was a Kickstarter project. Fast-forward a couple of years and Ajoto are now stocked in places such as Harrods and The Conran Shop.
Made in the UK using high precision manufacturing, each pen is cut from a solid bar of metal and involves over 20 manufacturers to produce. Originally available in Aluminium and Brass (lead-free) they have recently launched The Premium Pen Collection for the most discerning of tastes. Plated with precious metals such as Rose Gold, 14CT Gold and Rhodium by highly skilled specialists in the UK, who also work for the world’s finest jewellery and private jet companies.
Anyone who knows me well will know that the packaging and presentation for me is just as important as the product itself. And Ajoto haven’t let me down with their attention to detail. The Pen comes in gorgeous packaging, nested in its own cork tray (made in Portugal) and delivered with a hand-written note.
Another design detail that I simply love is the hidden engraved message on the screw that holds the mechanism together. It reads ‘make your mark’. Only to be discovered by the ultra curious.
The Pen is priced £135 – £285 and can be ordered online from Ajoto.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering… Ajoto stands for ‘A journey to’.
3. ‘Paper’ Candle by Assouline
Now, not all men are partial to a candle. Or maybe they wouldn’t admit it if they were. But with scents like ‘Wood’, ‘Paper’ and ‘Leather’, even the most manliest of men couldn’t be disappointed.
Luxury, lifestyle brand, Assouline have extended their passion for beautiful books into refined gift items and unique accessories for the contemporary modern-day, personal library.
The French brand has worked with the world’s best perfumers to create a series of scented candles. The ‘Paper’ candle is made of scents of cedar and sandalwood, with clove and vanilla base notes. I love the simple typographic label and graphic packaging.
The range is available from the Wallpaper Store for £32 each.
4. Library for Life: Love, by The School of Life
How about this beautiful set of four hardback books from The School of Life?
This box set from their Library for Life collection contains their pick of essential classic and modern texts on Love. Linen bound in bright orange with blue foil blocked graphics, this collection is perfect for the more romantic and musing man, the intelligent thinker. And they would look great on the bookshelf too!
The titles in this set are:
- On Love by Stendhal
- Essays in Love by Alain de Botton
- A Lover’s Discourse by Roland Barthes
- Conditions of Love by John Armstrong
Buy online or in store from The School of Life for £65.
5. Mast Chocolate Collection
Last, but certainly not least, in my top Valentine’s picks is chocolate from the New York based Mast brothers. Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than chocolate in my book. But it has to be pretty damn good! And this is.
The artisan chocolatiers have created 12 innovative bean-to-bar flavours for this collection, including ‘Smoke’, ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Goat Milk’, and ‘Sheep Milk’. You will be hard pushed to pick a favourite.
I love the attention to detail and craftmanship of their packaging. Each bar is beautifully wrapped in a boldly printed, avant-garde and eye-catching, abstract design. The collection is also presented in a gorgeous black presentation box – so no need for wrapping.
Visit their cool, minimalist designed, Shoreditch based store to pick up a few bars or visit their website to place an order.
The Complete Collection of 12 x 70g bars is £75. A selection of 6 Milk Chocolate or 6 Dark Chocolate bars are available for £40 each. Or just pick your favourite individual bars from £4 – £19.
